Noumena: Death walks with me

12/06/13  ||  Cobal

Noumena are a Finnish band labeled under the tag of melodic death metal, except “Death walks with me” is a rather ballad-oriented album. Being fully unfamiliar with the band’s work, I can only say there are two types of songs in this record: First, you have the typical riff-based metal songs, and second, you get these female sung by melancholic ballads. As for the metal songs, I was expecting some Children of Bodom-like stuff, and yet, their style flirts with many different schools of death metal other than the Finnish one. Still they didn’t do much for me. When it comes to the slower, more melodic and downhearted tracks, I’d say they’re probably the best ones in the album in terms of songwriting and detail. Having said that, lemme state this: I don’t expect to listen to songs that my sister could sing if she knew the lyrics. And if I had a sister.

5/10: Not terrible, but I’ll pass.
